CHAMPION OF DEMA - MCM COMIC CON SUCCESS!

Kirucomics along with many other comic makers were at the MCMExpo this past weekend. We had a table at the comic village CH9 and were selling our latest graphic novel Champion of Dema.

The comic con was such a blast, we had fun meeting funny people, messing around with cosplayers and of course telling the world about Champion of Dema.

Quite a lot of people came to buy Champion of Dema this weekend, it was actually very popular. And everyone that we spoke to about the story found the concept to be an interesting one, so it seems safe to say we might have a winning story with us.

We also got to meet other awesome comic creators like Paul Dauffield and of course the awesome guys at subversive comics.
To all those that bought the Champion of Dema graphic novel from us, please don't forget to give us feedback on our facebook page by going to https://www.facebook.com/kirucomics.
Now that the MCM is over, the next step for us at Kirucomics is to continue to push Champion of Dema as much as possible whilst at the same time starting on a new project. A manga series known as Jinn Detective

CHAMPION OF DEMA COMPLETED!!

That’s right people!

What we've all been waiting for is finally complete. Champion Of Dema is done! All 82 pages of artwork have been inked and revised. Can't believe we made it, all the way from a kickstarter campaign and now to a finished product. The novel is going to be pretty awesome if we do say so ourselves... Here's a quick sample :)
A completed double page spread from Champion of Dema.

What we're doing now is compiling the pages together, going through each page, proof reading, rearranging and just making sure everything is 100% top notch. We're also working on additional pages like credits, journal excerpts and so on.
Pretty soon we should be looking to send the pdf book off to the printers and then it’s only a matter of time before we get back the hard copies and all the beautiful people that pledged and contributed can finally receive their rewards all at once.
Then the next step will be promotion... doing our best to spread the word and get this graphic novel into every comic scene that we can. That is going to be the difficult part and we sincerely hope you guys will be willing to help us in any you can with that.
We're so excited and honestly can’t wait for the world to read this graphic novel. We would love to hear all your opinions on it :)
That’s all the news we have for now folks

EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

Education is something that many may take for granted, at early ages, education is compulsory for most. However it is well known that as you reach the stages for higher and further education, access to it becomes harder or difficult for most.

Recently in Nigeria, University students have suffered an education loss as they had to put their learning on hold due to lecturer strikes by the ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) where all public Universities (over sixty) were closed. The strike lasted nearly Six months.

Comic illustrating the ASUU struggle with the President. The caption reads "The child that doesn't allow his mother to sleep, also won't sleep."
In this society, we are constantly being told by the media that we have access to particular jobs of our choice; meanwhile you have others stating university isn’t everything, and that one does not necessarily need a degree to get far in life etc. However around the world, this is not the same for everyone.

For example in countries like the UK, we’re lucky enough to have student finance and many other helpful boards. Basically there is always help available and even with the strikes that have occurred, teaching still goes on. Six months of absent teachers is something that is very unlikely to happen here.

The ASUU claim their reasons are justified and believed it was the only way to force the government to take action. The fact that the universities need better teaching conditions amongst other requests are said to be responsible for the teachers feeling the need to take this action. Yes, academic standards are important, however some feel refusing to teach at all, especially for six months could do more harm considering improvement in infrastructure is a national problem in Nigeria.

This is a letter to the government from the ASUU stating the reasons and terms of their strike; http://allafrica.com/stories/201312040218.html

This has had a detrimental effect on students all over Nigeria because education is probably more valued there due to that fact it isn’t easily acquired. With the increasing demand for university opportunities, it is understandable that many people do not think all terms the government have adhered to are even possible and there has to be an alternative approach to address the future issues instead of allowing such a thing to happen again.

FILE - Students and workers carry placards as they march on the Lagos-Ikorodu highway to protest against the suspension of academic activities following a nation-wide strike embarked by lecturers in state-owned universities in Lagos.
Students protesting against suspension of their education.

The strike was suspended in December 2013 after some funds were given to the universities. The government agreed to invest ‘billions’ into the system over the next couple of years to help resolve the issues plus tend to the lecturers as well as the students. Currently the most important thing is that now order has been resumed amongst the Universities, action and methods need to be put into place so a strike of such duration won’t happen again. Lecturers agreed to go back to teaching providing the government stick to their promises.

Final Thoughts

Yes, classes have resumed and there is relief but now there is extra pressure for students to catch up. It is a waiting game to see how severe the strike’s impact were on the student’s education.

CHAMPION OF DEMA KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN IS LIVE - GET YOUR COPY NOW!!

Day 4 of our kickstarter campaign

That's right people, KIRUcomics first ever kickstarter campaign has gone live and we're going to need your help more than ever to make this a success. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1088749339/champion-of-dema?ref=live

The campaign is for our latest project Champion of Dema, a one shot Afrocentric graphic novel about a reluctant hero who is constantly plagued by the citizens of his village to be their Champion. Our kickstarter goal is £3,000 and the deadline for the campaign is November 24th.

Kickstarter is a crowd funding platform in which you set a goal and tell the people what you wish to achieve. If the people like what you’re doing, they may pledge an amount to help you on your way and in return you give them a reward. So it's more or less you guys pre-ordering the novel before it's out.

Kade |Mabrin, the main character and the spirit of Dema

We've poured our hearts and souls into this project, we took the time to design each aspect of the characters and the city of Dema from the ground up. You can expect well rounded characters and a detailed city in which to let your imagination loose.

We really need everyone's help to make this all happen... So even if you can't fund it, you can help by simply spreading the word and letting as many people know as possible. Although if you want a free copy of the finished book you will have to pledge to get your hands on one. Please share this project on your twitter and facbook accounts (and any other social media sites).
